Athlete Feature: Monroe "Roe" P.

It is officially February 2021 and we’re excited to announce our new Athlete of the Month. She’s 10 years old, plays competitive soccer, bakes, and is known by the name of Roe. Roe was nominated for February’s AOTM by Coach Matt, and after learning more about this incredible athlete below, you’ll soon know why.

Here's what we’ve gathered from our interview with Roe and her mom:

Roe's Athletic Journey

Roe is currently 10 years old and in the 5th grade. She is a girl of many hobbies, some of which include making art and baking. In athletics, Roe thrives as a competitive soccer player, and also enjoys playing football and golf.

The Greatest Challenges

Conditioning and speed are Roe’s biggest challenges when she hits the soccer field. Making sure that she has solid speed of play and that she has the conditioning and endurance to play an entire game without tiring is no small feat, and is something Roe works to conquer while she’s on the turf here at Sterling’s Team Speed with Coach Matt.

When Team Speed Joined the Journey

Roe began training with us in 2019 in our Winter Sports Performance program and started training privately with Coach Matt this September.

Roe believes in working hard towards your goals and never giving up on your dreams. She also believes in going “all in, all heart, and having fun” in your endeavors. These beliefs attribute greatly to her work on the turf where she says, “Team Speed helps me focus on my goals as a player and makes me work hard, but they also like to have fun. One time, Coach Matt let me get his football out of his office and show the boys my quarterback arm!”

Goals

When Roe started training with Coach Matt, her goals were to increase her speed of play and become an overall stronger player. Specifically, she wanted to get faster both in running and her footwork. Since training with Coach Matt, she has been able to take 2 minutes off her mile - a great achievement on our turf!

"Every time Roe trains, she puts in 110% effort and is always willing to work hard and put in the time. Her speed and strength have improved tremendously throughout her training and that’s due to her positivity and commitment to training consistently. But most of all, she always has a smile on her face and enjoys training.” - Coach Matt

Roe has seen a massive improvement in training since September, and she is still working towards her goals with Coach Matt. She hopes to continue to become a faster and stronger player and to have an awesome spring soccer season as she continues to develop in the sport she loves. Psst… We hear she is also thinking about playing flag football this year!

What Roe Wants to Say to Other Athletes with Big Dreams

We asked Roe what she’d like to say to other athletes with big goals or dreams. We’ll leave you with what she says below:

"To keep working hard towards your goals and to never give up. One of my favorite quotes that we keep on our whiteboard at home is from The Rock, Dwayne Johnson, ‘Success isn’t always about greatness. It is about consistency. Consistent hard work will lead to success. Greatness will come!’ It’s not about where you are today, but where you want to be tomorrow, and the work you are willing to do to get there.”

We couldn’t have said it better.
